Thorold Scrap Yard Fire

Scrap Yard Fire Thorold

A fire at Northeastern Ferrous Inc., a recycling and metal scrap yard located on Allanport Road in Thorold, caused the yard to burst into flame shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2011.

Multiple explosions rocked the yard sending fireballs and debris high into the air. Shrapnel tore into the surrounding woods, shredding leaves and ripping bark from the trees. The ping of metal on metal was like listening to a pinball machine in multi-ball play. – Writer’s embellishment, and not a good one at that.

The heavy black and grey plume of smoke that streamed across the sky could be seen in Fonthill, Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Thorold, Welland, and reportedly as far way as Lewiston, NY.
Access to the scene was blocked on Allanport Road at Barron Rd to the south, and Black Horse Corners at Highway 20 to the north. The fire was still burning as of 9:00 p.m. Thursday.
